Right now, there are between 8,000 and 10,000 lions, possibly more, living in distressing small enclosures across over 350 commercial captive lion facilities in South Africa.

The grim fate of adult lions deemed too old or dangerous for tourism interactions is alarming. They may be shot in canned hunting activities, a tragic end to a lifetime of cruelty and exploitation. To make matters worse, their bones are often kept by the commercial captive facility, while some are illegally exported for traditional Asian medicine.
